ALMOST PERFECT...

On November 4th in 2008 Barack Obama gave his famous “Yes we can” speech. In this speech he did everything rightexcept one thing.

  • He was able to do what many speakers dream to do. He had the audience repeat after him the key statement: “Yes we can”.

  • He connected from the first sentence onwards to the audience’s values: "If there is anyone out there who still doubts that America is a place where all things are possible, who still wonders if the dream of our founders is alive in our time, who still questions the power of our democracy, tonight is your answer.”

  • He told stories along the speech. The one that probably is still stuck in your mind is: "Ann Nixon Cooper is 106 years old. She was born just a generation past slavery; a time when there were no cars on the road or planes in the sky; when someone like her couldn't vote for two reasons - because she was a woman and because of the colour of her skin. […] And this year, in this election, she touched her finger to a screen, and cast her vote, because after 106 years in America, through the best of times and the darkest of hours, she knows how America can change.”

  • He held eye contact throughout the speech, varied his voice, volume, speed. He made pauses before and after key messages. There were moments in his speech when the 240.000 people in the audience held their breath and you could hear no sound. Everything was perfect.

  • But then he made one mistake. In the end of his speech the audience is so energized that everybody would join the "Yes we can" choir full volume, but Obama doesn’t make a pause long enough. He immediately says “Thank you” and shuts down the audience’s response. He lost the energy of the crowd by interrupting the audience. That was his only mistake.
